Setting Windows Default Label Size for Your Label Printer

We’ve received support calls from operators indicating that “Logbook is not saving their label printer settings.” The purpose of this article is to provide the instructions to help you check and set the Windows default label size for your labels. This process applies to both Brother, Dymo, or other label printers.

When printing labels, Ham Radio Deluxe Logbook uses whatever default label size is set in Windows for the label. Logbook depends upon the Windows settings to match the label size that is actually in the label printer. Cases where we see users having trouble is when the Default size set in Windows is different from the size of paper that is in the label printer.

Go to Windows “Printers & scanners” by typing “print” in the Windows search box next to the Windows Start menu.

Click on your label printer and then click “Manage”.

There are two sections of settings we will want to look at – “Printer Preferences” and “Printer Defaults.”

Then click “Printer Properties.”

This will show the “Paper available” in your label printer. Is this the size labels you have in your printer?

Checking/Setting Windows Preferences

Then click on “Preferences”. Depending on your label type, you will see one of the following forms:

Brother Label Printers

The Brother preferences will then show the current “preferred” paper size. Please check to make sure that’s what you have in your printer (this image shows a 62mm wide continuous feed label stock; other labels will show both width and height). *Note: changing to quality causes the labels to look much better. Set the preferred label type in your Brother printer. Click “OK.” More steps will follow.

DYMO Label Printers

Click the “Advanced” button and the following form will be displayed:

Select the paper stock you have in your Dymo Label printer and click “OK” to exit the form.

Now that we have set “Preferences,” we will set “Defaults.” (Unfortunately, they are not the same settings in Windows.)

Checking/Setting Windows Defaults

Within the “Properties” form for your label printer, click the “Advanced” tab. Then click “Printing Defaults.”

Depending on the model of label printer, you will see the following forms:

It’s worth pointing out that the “Defaults” may be different from the “Preferences.” We have no idea why.

Brother Label Printers

The Brother preferences will then show the current “default” paper size. Please check to make sure that’s what you have in your printer. *Note: changing to quality causes the labels to look much better. Set the default label type in your Brother printer. Then click “OK.”

DYMO Label Printers

Click the “Advanced” button and the following form will be displayed:

Select the paper stock you have in your Dymo Label printer and click “OK” to exit the form.

The label printer settings are now ready for Ham Radio Deluxe Logbook to print labels.
